State licensing board to consider suspension of pain doc

INDIANAPOLIS (WANE) The state medical licensing board gathered Thursday morning to discuss whether to extend the suspension of embattled Fort Wayne pain doctor Michael Cozzi.

Cozzi was arrested March 22 after federal DEA agents raided two of his homes and properties on suspicion of criminal over-prescribing practices.

According to the Indiana Attorney General’s office, Cozzi, the owner of FW Interventional Pain Management in Fort Wayne, prescribed more controlled substances than any other prescriber in Indiana over the last two years, including some two million doses of Oxycodone and 1.2 million doses of hydrocodone.

While the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office ultimately dropped a felony charge of Possession of a Narcotic Drug it filed against Cozzi, the state’s medical board suspended the doctor’s license for 90 days.

That term is now expired, and the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana will hear an Extension of Summary Suspension petition. The hearing will be held at the Indiana Government Center South in Indianapolis.
