Animal shelters offer help to find more than 80 rescued dogs forever homes

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – What started off as an investigation into a neighborhood rat problem turned into dozens of dogs being rescued.

It’s been one week since the shocking discovery was made at an Owen County home.

Officers declared the home on Shepard Road an emergency hazardous situation. The Sheriff’s Office worked with pest control and several other agencies to seize the property and deal with the contamination.

Now, Wabash Valley animal shelters are pulling together to pick up the pieces.

“It was pretty shocking and overwhelming, that’s a lot of animals to take in at one time,” said Andrea Phillips with the Clay County Humane Society.

Though the shelter is almost at full capacity, Phillips said the decision to lend a helping hand to the Owen County Humane Society was an easy one.

“Personally, I could not sleep. I thought we need to do something to help them. You know what we got a few cages, and they need some relief,” she said.

The shelter is now housing eleven of the rescued dogs. They have since been vaccinated, tested for heart-worm, and are in the process of being spayed and neutered.

“Most of them are very scared, scared and skittish, and nervous which breaks our hearts,” said Phillips.

Shelter workers are providing some much needed TLC, at least until the loving dogs find their forever homes. “I mean that’s what it’s all about. All of us are here for the same reason. It’s for the animals,” said Phillips.

Several of the dogs are still in the process of being treated. It could be several weeks before they are up for adoption.

Keeping up with vet bills is not cheap. The shelter is always in need of monetary donations. To find out more about how you can help call the clay county humane society at: (812) 446-5126There’s a list of donations items that the Owen County Humane Society needs.
