Dario Franchitti recalls Indy 500 win in 2012

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Dario Franchitti won the Indianapolis 500 three times during his career. His first win was in 2007.

His win came after the race was red flagged due to heavy rain. After a three hour delay the race resumed. Several teams tried to come up with the best way to win. A couple of cautions helped Franchitti save enough fuel to assume the lead. Before the race could restart, there was another accident and the rain soon followed. Franachiti took the checkered flag under caution.

In 2010, Franchitti took home his second Indy 500 win, leading 155 laps.

Fast forward to the white flag in 2012 when Ryan Hunter-Reay ran out of fuel. As Hunter-Reay slowed, Mike Conway ran over the corner of Hunter-Reay’s car, sending Conway airborne. A horrific looking crash but everyone would be OK. A caution froze the field.

Franchitti made his way around the track, taking the checkered flag under caution.

“This means so much. To come back after going away for a year, and I win the championship and the Indy 500. Thank you to everybody at Team Target, and I’m (explicit) near speechless right now.”
