Dirty pools: Warning signs, tips to stay healthy this summer

AVON, Ind. (WISH) — A new CDC study shows when tested one in eight public pools have to close immediately. It’s a health hazard many don’t consider when the warmer temperatures lure many to the pools. There are certain parasites like cryptosporidium, that won’t be killed, despite the chlorine and other chemicals in a pool. Those parasites can make you and your family very sick.

Devin Brennan, an environmental health specialist with Hendricks County, said it’s really important to shower before and after entering a pool. If you’ve had diarrhea in the past two weeks, you shouldn’t swim at all.

Also, remember to wash your hands before eating anything during a pool day and teach your kids not to urinate while swimming.

“Take your kids to the bathroom at least once an hour we always suggest. Don’t change diapers by the pool, don’t have them wear regular diapers, that’s not what they’re made for. They should have swim diapers. There’s the plastic guards that they can wear on the outside of it,” Brennan said.

There are also a few warning signs to look out for.

“If you look into a pool and can’t see the bottom of the pool, don’t get in it. If it smells really odd, that’s typically a sign that something is wrong,” Brennan said.

Brennan and his team have the responsibility of testing about 150 pools in just Hendricks County alone. That includes any public pools like those at a YMCA, hotel, school and even your home owner’s association pools. If it’s outdoors, it is tested every two weeks. If it’s inside, it’s once a month.
