Lawrence residents are calling a popular intersection dangerous

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) – On Friday, a fast-moving SUV out of control crashed right into a Swift Air Mechanical building on 46th Street and Franklin Road.

Inside there were two employees who suffered minor injures.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle Jayme Belk left the scene, but was later arrested.

The impact of the crash pushed Mary Darling to the ground.

Darling and another coworker were working inside the building when the crash happened.

She and her colleague suffered minor injures, but she is currently getting around with a walker, due to soreness and deep bruises.

Over the years the intersection has been the site of multiple accidents.

Under a previous mayoral administration there were plans for a massive road project along that stretch, but current Mayor Steve Collier discovered the plans for that project were underfunded.

“This is such a dangerous intersection, Lawrence really needs to do something about it,” said Darling.

The plan is to continue to pursue the road project, but it could take three years to secure funding to make it a reality. So Mayor Collier plans to address other areas immediately, such as more signage, and increasing visibility along the intersection.

“We are going to address the problem at the intersection,” said Collier.

Owners of Swift Air Mechanical plan on tearing down the building that was damaged recently in the crash, leaving the lot empty.
