Two police officers shot in Northern California

FREMONT (KRON) – Officers from multiple agencies are at two separate shootings in Fremont which has prompted a city-wide lockdown.

Residents are being asked to stay indoors, and a shelter in place has been ordered. Fremont police are advising the public to stay “out of barricaded areas” and avoid surrounding streets.

The incident began at approximately 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Washington andFremont Boulevard in the Irvinton Area.

An officer was conducting a routine traffic stop when the suspect backed his vehicle into the police car at which point shots were exchanged, police spokeswoman Officer Geneva Bosques said.

The suspect then pulled his car forward and fled on foot.

One officer was injured during this exchange, it is unclear what injuries the officer is suffering from.

Police continued to track the suspect. He was located about 10 minutes later on Roberts Avenue.

Shots were fired again and the other police officer was shot.

Both the officers that have been shot are in the hospital recovering.

Police said the suspects are still on the run. It’s unknown how many suspects are being sought.

Bosques said one of the suspects is described as a Hispanic man about 6 feet tall, possibly with a shaved head, wearing a San Francisco Giants shirt and shorts. Police said they cannot verify is the suspect is injured.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is now searching for the suspect.

Fremont police have confirmed both officers are alive. One officer is in surgery now, police said.
