Walkers to Raise Awareness For Kidney Disease

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – With the increase in diabetes and high blood pressure — two major kidney disease risk factors — kidney disease is on the rise. In Indiana alone 8,000 Hoosiers are being treated for kidney failure, and 1,300 are awaiting lifesaving transplants.  On Saturday, June 11th hundreds of people will gather at the Indiana Historical Society to raise awareness of kidney disease, organ donation and the importance of early screening and healthy lifestyle for those at risk at The National Kidney Foundation of Indiana’s annual Indianapolis Kidney Walk.

“This walk will help others take the lifesaving step of getting their kidneys checked,” said Honorary Chair and Carmel Fire Chief, David Haboush. “By participating in the Kidney Walk, we’re all helping sound the alert about the public health problem of kidney disease. There are 26 million Americans living with kidney disease, and most of them don’t know it. Anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes, a family history of kidney failure, and anyone over the age of 60 is at risk are strongly encouraged to get their kidneys checked.”

The Kidney Walk is the nation’s largest fundraiser to fight kidney disease. Held in nearly 100 communities, more than 75,000 walkers join NKF to raise over $8 million to help kidney patients and their families each year. More than 80 cents of every dollar donated directly supports NKF programs and services.

Registration begins at 8:30 AM and the 5K walk begins at 9:30 AM. To register for the Kidney Walk, visit www.kidneywalk.org or call 800-382-9971 for more information.
