Free admission to Children’s Museum Thursday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – You can get into the Indianapolis Children’s Museum for free on Thursday night.

It’s part of the “Juneteenth” celebration. It’s commemorating the end of slavery and the civil war.

The museum will have drum performances and singing, as well as other performances sharing history from 1865.

Admission is free from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Below is a special list of programs for the Juneteenth celebration:

  • InfoZone -Indianapolis Public Library Branch: Read your way through books about Juneteenth and enter your name into a drawing for a free book.

    Devon Kondaki, “Winzlow” will introduce you to Winzlow Nation through singing and drawing.

  • Griot Drum Ensemble Performances: Enjoy energetic and engaging percussion music as the Griot Drum Ensemble performs authentic, traditional West African and Diaspora drumming.
  • Freetown Village Singing Troupe: Experience vibrant vocal performances from Freetown Village. The living history museum interpreters represent the men and women of the many African American communities that grew throughout Indiana during the years following the end of the Civil War.
  • Juneteenth Memories: Learn more about the significance and history of Juneteenth with storyteller Portia Jackson as she shares some of her favorite Juneteenth memories.
  • Ruby’s Story: The Power of Children: Escorted by federal marshals, Ruby Bridges walked through angry, threatening crowds to get to her first-grade classroom. Hear from the people that Ruby inspired tell her story in this live theatrical performance.
