Billy Ray Cyrus to play Elvis impersonator in new comedy

Years ago, he gave us an “Achy Breaky Heart,” and now country superstar turned actor/producer Billy Ray Cyrus is starring in a new comedy, set to air on CMT Monday, June 6. Billy Ray, along with actress Joey Lauren Adams, chat with Amber about their new show, “Still the King.”ABOUT “STILL THE KING”:

Billy Ray Cyrus plays Vernon Brown in the scripted CMT comedy Still The King. AKA “Burnin’ Vernon,” Cyrus portrays a scandal-ridden washed up one-hit wonder who is kicked out of country music, only to emerge 20 years later as the second best Elvis impersonator. After crashing into an old country church outside of Nashville during a drunken bender, he is sentenced to return and perform community service. Along the way he pretends to be the congregation’s new minister and re-connects with a former one-night-stand, Debbie Lynn, played by Joey Lauren Adams, only to discover he has a 15-year-old daughter he’s never met.

The Kentucky-born Cyrus was a hit from his first album, with the song “Achy Breaky Heart” topping the pop and country charts. In 2006, he took on the role of a father of two in the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, which launched him into a new realm of fame.

Joey Lauren Adams is a Golden Globe® nominated actress who is known for her roles in Big Daddy, Dazed and Confused, Chasing Amy and The Break-Up. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award® for her role in Chasing Amy. Adams made her directorial debut in the 2006 film, Come Early Morning.

“Still the King” premieres Sunday, June 12 at 9pm on CMT.
