Indy to remember Sen. Robert Kennedy’s death

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis will remember Senator Robert Kennedy’s death Monday afternoon.

48 year ago, Kennedy died after being shot in Los Angeles. The assassination came eight weeks after he asked for calm and understanding in Indianapolis, which helped keep peace in the city the night Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed.

“Senator Kennedy’s death came as a harsh aftershock for our city, which had attended to the wisdom of that great man when Dr. King died,” says Judge David J. Dreyer, co-chair of the Kennedy King Memorial Initiative. “The man who said to Indianapolis that what we need is not division or hatred or violence or lawlessness, but love, wisdom and compassion must be remembered for his words and his courage.”

The remembrance will take place at King Park, 17th and Broadway Streets in Indianapolis.

Mayor Joe Hogsett and Dr. David Hampton, the deputy mayor for neighborhood engagement, will speak at the event. The Eastside New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Male Chorus will provide music from students.

Judge Dreyer and state Rep. Greg Porter will also speak at the event. The Initiative has a master plan to transform the site into a state and national destination that will attract visitors to Indianapolis.
