AP: Clinton secures delegates needed to clinch democratic nomination

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hillary Clinton has secured the number of delegates needed to become the presumptive democratic nominee according to the Associated Press and CNN. Clinton makes history as the first woman to lead the presidential ticket of a major political party.

Clinton has clinched the nomination by securing 2,384 delegates. CNN’s delegate count finds that Clinton secured 1,812 pledged delegates and 572 super-delegates. She needed 2,383 to secure the nomination.

Clinton was speaking at a campaign event in California when the news broke.

“According to the news we are in the brink of a historic, historic, unprecedented moment but we still have work to do, don’t we,” said Clinton.

Clinton went on to say she’s ready to take on Donald Trump.

“We still have the best years of America ahead of us. If we make the decisions that are necessary. We can enter that future with confidence and optimism. Enough with the fear, enough with the anger, enough with the bigotry, enough with the bullying,” said Clinton.

Bernie Sanders isn’t giving up yet. The Sanders team issed a statement late Monday that argued superdelegates should not be counted in the delegate totals until the party convention in July. The spokesperson went on to say it’s “our job from now until the convention to convince those superdelegates that Bernie is by far the strongest candidate against Donald Trump.”

There are six primary contests Tuesday, including California and New Jersey. Both candidates are encouraging supporters to vote.
