Indiana Republicans denounce Trump’s comments

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A handful of key Indiana Republicans denounced Donald Trump Tuesday for the racially tinged remarks directed at a federal judge.

Democrats say they aren’t going far enough.

This is a hot topic all over the country, but because federal Judge Gustavo Curiel is a native Hoosier, it’s getting more play here.

Donald Trump believes Curiel shouldn’t preside over a lawsuit against Trump University because his Mexican heritage makes him biased, according to Trump.

Governor Mike Pence called Trump’s comments inappropriate.

“I don’t think it’s ever appropriate to question the partiality of a judge based on their ethnic background,” he said.

Others who spoke up for the first time, too, include GOP Senator Dan Coats who tweeted that Trump’s comments were “totally inappropriate.”

Congresswoman Susan Brooks also took to Twitter. She called the comments “completely inappropriate.”

Democrat Baron Hill denounced, Todd Young, his opponent in this year’s Senate, race for not being forceful enough.

Young’s campaign manager called the Trump remarks “highly inappropriate.”

“If you agree with Donald Trump and can’t denounce him based on the things that he has said, then you might just as well take the Statue of Liberty and kick it into the New York harbor,” said Hill, “because it won’t mean anything.

He went on to say, “That’s not the America we’ve come to appreciate in this country. America is for everybody.”

Trump issued a statement saying that his comments have been “misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage.”

He said he is friends with and employs thousands of people of Hispanic descent, but feels justified in questioning whether he is receiving a fair trial.

He also said he doesn’t intend to comment on this matter any further.
