2 Pacers Bikeshare bikes stolen from Fletcher Place, 1 recovered

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Pacers Bikeshare program is dealing with a one-of-a-kind theft and they’re asking for your help.

Just a handful of bikes have been stolen since this program started two years ago. And now a missing bike is the only one they haven’t recovered.

It’s an $8 ride that’s now costing the individual involved $1,500.

“If a bike is not returned within 24 hours it is considered stolen and the full cost of the bike will be charged to the card holder,” said Dan Remington, the customer service manager for Pacers Bikeshare.

Remington said on May 25th at the Virginia Avenue and Norwood Street location a member was approached.

“Someone was approached by two individuals and asked if he would be willing to check out bikes for them in exchange for cash using his credit car,” he said.

One of the bikes was recovered a week later a few blocks away at Prospect Street and State Avenue. The situation has baffled other bike share members.

“I’ve lived in cities long enough to know that when somebody comes up and offers me a deal, the answer is usually, ‘no,’” said Brad King.

The group said bikes that are deemed stolen are usually returned within a week or two.

They’re asking you to be on the lookout and call IMPD if you spot the bike at 317-327-3811.

They said this is a costly reminder to everyone who uses the bike share.

“It is a liability when you swipe your card you are on the hook for these bikes, so take that responsibility seriously,” said Remington.

The bikes have GPS systems in them, but they’re passive, meaning they can only track the bike’s location when it’s re-docked.
