More than 200 meal sites will participate in Summer Food Servings

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indy Parks will kick-off it’s Summer Food Servings Program on Wednesday morning, in partnership with the City of Indianapolis and Indiana Department of Education.

The program allows children 18 years old and younger to receive free, nutritious lunches during the summer months.

Some meal sites will offer both breakfast and lunch.

More than 200 meal sites throughout Marion County will participate in the program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.

Indy Parks will provide daily delivery of meals to the program sites, which include some park locations and 36 mobile sites. Additionally, Indy Parks is offering free program training for participating organizations and groups in Marion County.

“When they are no longer in school during summer, many of these children do not have an opportunity to receive those nutritious meals,” said Wayne Township School Superintendent, Jeff Butts. “So the summer servings program is a terrific opportunity for our students not only to get nutritious meals, but in our case, for many of our school’s staff to interact with our children thorughout the summer months in our school houses and the community partners.”

The kick-off event will take place at Stout Field. At 10:45 a.m., children will be able to participate in activities with members of the Indy Eleven soccer team and the Girl Scouts.

At 11 a.m. guest speakers will hand out lunches to the children.

At 11:10 a.m. the guest speakers will give remarks. Guest speakers include Indy Parks Director Linda Broadfoot,  Wayne Township Superintendent Dr. Jeff Butts, District 97 Representative Justin Moed, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz and Megan Sims of the Office of Representative André Carson.
