Three smash-and-grabs reported within a mile radius since Monday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -Three people have reported smash-and-grab thefts from their cars in the last week within a mile radius.

The latest burglary happened Tuesday outside Binkley’s restaurant at Kessler Boulevard and College Avenue.

Binkley’s is a popular restaurant in a busy neighborhood. The parking lot is surrounded by signs warning people of 24/7 video surveillance.

None of that stopped a thief from smashing a car window in the lot, according to a police report. The report said someone stole from the car and took off.

The burglary happened around 6 p.m. just down the street from Rod Converse.

“Somebody had to have seen it,” Converse said. “Nobody’s watching out for everybody else. If somebody saw something, they’ve got to say something.”

Monday, less than a mile from Binkley’s, a security camera captured two more smash-and-grabs. A man drove into the Applebee’s parking lot at 1 p.m. and stole electronics from two cars.

Police said the suspect in Monday’s burglaries drove a tan Grand Prix.

Detectives don’t have a suspect description from Tuesday’s burglaries and they aren’t sure if all three crimes are connected, police said.

24-Hour News 8 reached out to the owners of Binkley’s to see if their cameras captured the crime, but no one responded.

Converse describes the neighborhood as peaceful, but he still has a security system: a two-year-old watchdog and his own two eyes.

“Keep an eye on everything. Keep everything secure,” he said.

Binkley’s offers similar advice. Management placed signs in the parking lot telling people to not keep valuables in their cars.

Those are words of wisdom for drivers, but Converse has a tip for the thief.

“Watch out,” he said. “You’re going to get caught. Sooner or later, you’ll slip up and somebody will see you.”
