2 fatally shot, 2 others injured after violent start to weekend in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It’s been a violent weekend so far in Indianapolis. Two people are dead and two others were injured during separate shooting incidents. Both incidents happened on the city’s west side Saturday morning.

Regulars at the Checkered Flag Tavern on West Morris Street come for the food and drinks, but mainly for the atmosphere.

“Great food and he was great, bands here,” said Michelle Boswell.

Her husband, Curtis Boswell, added, “It’s got a very laid back atmosphere. Good people, easy going, never had any problems here.”

There were no problems until early Saturday morning when, according to police, three men were shot in the parking lot.

“[It’s] just a normal bar. Everybody’s having fun and, you know, that all came to an end,” said manager Stacey Snead.

Snead says surveillance cameras captured everything. He passed the video on to police. It’s not available at this time, but Snead describes what he saw, “Showed them having a little, it looked like, argument by the guy’s truck, and then they started shooting each other. You could see the muzzle flashes on the video.”

According to IMPD, 36-year old Daniel Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Forty-five-year old Kevin Wells was shot in the neck and rushed to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition. Police found 33-year old Dustin Bourne in a home off of South Whitcomb with a gunshot wound to his thigh. He was also taken to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in good condition.

“No one really knew what happened then. We just knew there was a guy shot and another one that was there bleeding. So, it was kind of crazy,” Snead said.

But things didn’t stop there. Another shooting happened, also on the west side, in the 1100 block of Centennial Street. Police say somebody shot and killed 42-year old Jason Breeden. He was found lying on a porch. They believe he was killed over an ongoing dispute. Police took a man into custody for questioning.

Authorities say they have not made any arrests in either shooting, however, they are not looking for suspects.
