Coroner releases name of passenger who died in apartment pond

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Marion County Coroners office released the name of the man who died after a vehicle plunged into the water on Saturday.

Jachai Edwards was pulled from a car submerged in water at the Mariners Village Apartment in the 7000 block of Islander Drive, near I-74 and I-465, around 9:30 p.m.

Two people were inside when the car crashed into water about six feet deep, according to the Wayne Township Fire Department. A female driver escaped and swam to shore, but rescue divers searched for about 40 minutes before pulling Edwards’ body out.

Multiple witnesses jumped into the water to help before rescue crews arrived, Wayne Township Fire Department officials said.

It’s still not clear how the car ended up in the water.
