Crawfordsville father faces charges in 5-month-old son’s death

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A Crawfordsville man faces formal charges in the death of his 5-month-old son.

The child died Sunday at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. An autopsy was performed by the Marion County coroner Monday and as a result of the findings, amended charges were filed relating to the child’s death.

According to online court records, 26-year old Steven Filley is charged with aggravated battery, battery resulting in death to a person less than 14 years old and neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Crawfordsville Police Detective Lt. Bob Rivers said police were called to Filley’s home on South Walnut Street Tuesday, June 7 for a call of an unresponsive child. The boy was taken to a local hospital with head injuries, then airlifted to Riley where he died from head trauma injuries.

Filley initially told investigators, he found the boy unresponsive and then fell with him on the way to make the 911 call. However, Rivers said medical experts believe the boy’s injuries are not consistent with Filley’s story.

Police said Filley has since changed his accounts of the incident.

Filley was arrested Thursday, June 9 and taken to the Montgomery County Jail. He’s currently being held on a $20,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing by the Crawfordsville Police Department and Child Protective Services of Montgomery County. Authorities said additional charges could be filed.
