Young boy repairing used bikes for other kids in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Peter Greer, 10, is a young boy with a big heart from Lafayette. He’s taken it upon himself to spend his summer giving back to other children in his community.

Greer has been collecting used bikes, repairing them, and turning what was once junk to one kid into a gift for another.

In the back room of Union Street Auto Sales, you will see Greer hard at work. He is spending his summer going to work with his mom.

But Greer has taken on a job of his own.

“We’ve got big bikes, small bikes, girl bikes, boy bikes, mountain bikes and little girl bikes,” Greer explained.

People have donated bikes to Greer so that he could set out on his mission to help kids in need. He currently has about 60 bikes to repair before giving them away.

For each bike, he has a different job to get done. Some need new tires and others need a paint job.

“You want to have more than one layer of paint, that’s why I’m painting it where it’s already been painted,” Greer explained as he worked on a bike. “Sometimes it takes me a week, maybe three days, it just depends on what it needs.”

Peter was able to give Dalton Hughes a bike. Hughes and several other kids were walking by Union Street Auto Sales one day, when they saw Greer working on a bike.

When they asked Greer how much a bike would cost, Greer told the kids what he was doing and let them pick out a new bike.

“I feel lucky because I’ve never had somebody just give me a bike like that,” Hughes explained.

For Greer and now Hughes, it is more than just a bike.

“They got their bike, came back, and rode with me and now we’re friends,” Greer said with a smile on his face.

Hughes added, “I’m just thankful that he was nice and caring.”

Greer replied, “It makes me feel good and happy that I’m helping other people.”

If you’d like a bike, or would like to donate a bike or other materials to Greer, you can stop by Union Street Auto Sales located at 176 State Road 25 West in Lafayette.
