Rep. Brooks: ‘Congress can do more’ to battle domestic terror

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Congress is working on ways to help law enforcement prevent attacks like the one in Orlando.

Just last week the Republicans in Congress published an agenda that calls for enhanced intelligence efforts and what they call “increased cyber threat sharing with the private sector.”

Indiana Congresswoman Susan Brooks (R-5th District) on Tuesday said that more can be done to confront homegrown threats and that the Republican recommendations will help.

Brooks admits that efforts to prevent tragedies like the one in Orlando involve a delicate balance between privacy rights and public safety interests.

She also says that law enforcement agencies need our help. “We as citizens have an obligation to work with law enforcement to keep us safe,” she said. “They cannot do it by themselves. Law enforcement cannot keep us safe by themselves. They must have the citizens’ cooperation and the citizens’ participation in informing them of tips, of concerns about people who may be radicalized in our country.”

A number of committees in Congress are working on those recommendations. The events in Orlando give them new motivation.

Congresswoman Brooks says the government needs to do more. “It didn’t just happen in Florida,” she said. “It really is affecting the whole country.”
