With over 40 years of tradition, the Bloomington Farmers Market is known as the largest in Indiana and is rated #1 in the state! Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market
• Accompanied by live music, 100+ local vendors sell items like microgreens, tamales, small-batch barbecue sauce, paleo foods, organic fruits and vegetables, maple candy and Italian pastries.
• This weekend (June 18), the farmers’ market ends at noon to make way for Taste of Bloomington (from 3-11 p.m., an annual festival celebrating B-town’s best restaurants, wineries and breweries) and Arts Fair on the Square (from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., a juried art show). Three stages will feature live music.
• Families and others can come for the farmers’ market in the cool morning weather, then enjoy air-conditioned comfort at the WonderLab Museum (a science museum geared for toddlers through early elementary school kids), the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University or Bloomington’s many restaurants.
• On the second Saturday of every month, A Fair of the Arts accompanies the farmers’ market. Shoppers can find handmade hats, bags, scarves, jewelry, metalwork, woodwork, baskets and more.
• Farmers’ market regular schedule:
– Saturdays: April-September, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
– Saturdays: October-November, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
– Tuesdays: June-September, 4 to 7 p.m.
• Other upcoming events:
– Homegrown Indiana Farm Tour: Enjoy a tour of Maple Valley Farm, a wine tasting, a vineyard tour, and a farm-to-fork meal at Oliver Winery (Sunday, July 24, 4 to 8:30 p.m., $45 per person).
– Tomato Tasting: Taste a spectrum of locally-grown heirloom tomatoes at the market on Saturday, August 6. (free taste on the plaza)
Marcia Veldman of Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market
• Marcia works as the farmers’ market coordinator. She also operates Meadowlark Farm, where she grows vegetables, herbs and cut flowers.
• Marcia was appointed Bloomington’s Woman of the Year in 2013 in honor of her activism for food justice, security and sustainability.
Louise Miracle of Pie First Bakery
• In 2012, Louise and Rick Miracle started their quest to find the perfect pie crust, but as they visited pie shops across Indiana and Michigan, they realized the art of pie was a vanishing skill. They started their own bakery, Pie First Bakery, to keep the tradition alive.
• Thanks to its bright pink tent, you can easily spot Pie First at the Bloomington Farmer’s Market.
• Pie First sells a wide range of sweet and savory pies to celebrate pie as the only dessert you can eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Pie First’s most popular item is its fruit tarts.
• When she’s not baking, Louise works as a psychologist. She has a practice in Bloomington.
