7,000-plus Indiana customers without power day after storms

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana electric utilities report more than 7,000 of their customers had no service a day after powerful storms lashed the state, downing tree limbs and power lines.

Indianapolis Power and Light Co. reported more than 6,900 customers without service around 1 p.m. EDT Thursday following the storms that struck central Indiana the previous afternoon.

The Indianapolis Fire Department says winds that gusted as high as 66 mph in Indianapolis blew off a roof at Bethany Village assisted living apartments on the city’s south side, displacing 70 residents. No injuries were reported.

IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith (ryt) says dispatchers received 100 calls reporting downed power lines. She says a water rescue team helped evacuate several residents of a west side neighborhood.
