Berry picking with the kids

Berry picking in Indiana is a huge treat for local families! Taking the kids isn’t always super-efficient, but it’s a fun time and creates fantastic memories. Right now in Central Indiana, you can pick strawberries, raspberries and black raspberries. Later this month, you’ll have access to picking fresh blueberries. Indy With Kids’ Katy Mann says strawberry season is just about over so be sure to call ahead and see if upick is available at your favorite location. Here are her tips:

Where to go:

At this time you can still find berries at the following locations, be sure to call ahead for updates and picking times.

Spencer Farms in Noblesville is very popular with families and they offer different berries for picking throughout the summer.

Distelrath Farms on the east side of Indianapolis has some organic strawberries available for picking by appointment only.

Driving Wind Berry Farm is located just north of downtown Indy and has a wonderful crop of u pick blueberries (anticipated late June – early July)

Other local farms offer upick or self pick but many are “picked out” for the season. Here’s a list of Indy area strawberry picking locations for next year.

What to bring:

Dress for the weather, including covering up a bit if it’s really hot and sunny, there is NO SHADE out in the fields. Wear sunblock and reapply regularly. You may consider wearing insect repellent, especially for the berries that grow in bushes. On sunny days, hats and sunglasses are a must. Water is always at the top of my list.

If you have boxes or containers for collecting berries, this will save you a couple of dollars, as most locations have a fee for the containers.

Have fun!
