Two women carjacked at gunpoint after night out in Broad Ripple

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) –  A fun night in Broad Ripple turned frightening for two women. Police said they were carjacked at gunpoint as they were leaving the bars around 3 a.m.

“I’ve only lived here a couple months but usually there’s nothing that bad here,” said a man who lives in the 6100 block of Guilford Avenue.

On a calm, sunny afternoon it sure felt like nothing bad happens on his block. But in the wee hours of the morning it was a different story.

Police said two women were walking south from Broad Ripple Avenue when they were carjacked by a man with a gun.

“It is a little surprising, normally people are pretty chill over here,” said Alyssa Johnson. She said she happened to be out in Broad Ripple last night as well.

“Honestly it makes me appreciate my dad because he actually told me that people were getting into cars last night before I came,” she said.

Car break-ins have been reported around Broad Ripple just like other parts of the city.

A few weeks earlier though, a man walking alone late at night says he was robbed near the intersection of Broad Ripple Avenue and Guilford Avenue.

But some people aren’t going to let a few crimes change their perception of this popular neighborhood.

“I’ve always felt safe in Broad Ripple. I’m always with friends and it’s nothing I’ve had to be worried about and hopefully something I never have to be worried about,” the neighbor said.

Guilford Avenue is a popular spot for parking because it’s free but there’s not much lighting.

It’s why police suggest people use the parking garage near College Avenue and Westfield Boulevard, an area with more traffic and better lighting.

Walking in a group could help deter criminals as well but unfortunately Thursday night, it didn’t.

The good news is police said the two women weren’t hurt. Early Friday morning police said they found the stolen car in at an apartment complex in the Castleton area. They said the key was laying on the front and that they potentially got a fingerprint from the suspect.
