Edinburgh man dies after fleeing from police

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – A death investigation has begun after an Edinburgh man fled from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department and died after collapsing.

According to Indiana State Police Detectives, Monday around 8:30 p.m., the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department was sent to the 5100 block of North County Road 250 West in Bartholomew County after reports of a suspicious vehicle.

Police said when they arrived on scene, they saw a white 1996 Dodge van traveling in the area. As they followed the van, they said it came to a stop, then a backseat passenger, Robert Quick, 44 of Edinburgh, fled from the van and ran on foot. Quick then got into the Driftwood River and swam across to the opposite side. When he reached the opposite side, police said he began having medical difficulties and collapsed.

An officer made it across the river and found Quick unresponsive. Medics were called and he was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police later found Quick was wanted on multiple warrants out of Johnson and Bartholomew Counties.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.
