From Hurricanes to Wildfires, Allstate Urges Families to Take Action Before Disaster Strikes

Summer can bring a wide range of weather-related disasters across the country. Whether that means hurricanes, tornadoes, hail, flooding or wildfires, families can’t – and shouldn’t – wait to prepare. Mark McGillivray, Senior Vice President, Allstate Claims, shares tips families should take to prepare for disasters in advance including packing emergency kits, taking inventory and planning and practicing escape and evacuation plans.

Before severe storms strike, families should consider being proactive and doing one or all three of the following:Pack Your Emergency Kit

• The emergency kit can include first-aid supplies, personal hygiene items, water, non-perishable food, a weather radio and flashlight.Protect Your Stuff

• Take inventory of your items by walking through your home with your phone. Upload pictures of your possessions to Allstate’s Digital Locker which is free and available to everyone.Practice Your Escape with an Evacuation Plan

• Know your local evacuation routes and practice your escape plan before local authorities and law enforcement say it’s time to leave.

Research shows since 1980, the occurrence of weather-related disasters has increased by more than 230 percent. According to AccuWeather, natural disasters have affected 217 million people every single year single 1990.
