Lightning in Indiana visible nearly 100 miles away

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD/MEDIA GENERAL) – On rare occasions, weather experts say you can see lightning from up to 150 miles away. Monday night was one of those occasions.

Thunderstorms erupted Monday evening in Branch and St. Joseph counties in Michigan and tracked and developed to the south and southeast. The tower cumulonimbus clouds were visible to much of southern Michigan before sunset.

As the sky darkened, lightning became visible. The tops of the storms reached up to 50,000 feet and because skies were clear, lightning that was happening near Fort Wayne, Indiana, was visible as far away as Grand Rapids, Michigan – about 90 miles away.
