Woman wants violence to stop after drive-by shooting
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis woman said her home was hit during a drive-by shooting on the city’s north side. She’s now pleading for an end to the violence.
Police are still investigating the shooting that injured two women. The first victim was sent to the hospital and the second was treated and released at the scene.
It happened at a home near 35th St. and Clifton St. early Wednesday morning.
The woman who did not want to go on camera said she was on the porch with several people. She went inside for about 15 minutes when she heard the shooting.
“I got up, I said the prayer, I heard the shots and I ran to check to see whether everyone was okay and that’s when the young lady was shot,” she said.
She’s not sure who’s behind the shooting or why. She said she just wants the violence to stop.
“The drive by shooting, whatever the intentions were for it was senseless,” she said. “I had three grandchildren lying in there on the floor.”
Police arrived on scene and found two victims, including the niece of a volunteer with the Indy Ten Point Coalition. The faith-based group is known for its mission to reduce violence through programs and street patrols.
“That was wrong, that was cowardice and whoever did it you’re not going to get away,” she said.
About an hour or so before that, police said they received a call for a woman shot and killed near Layman Ave. and 34th Street. Police said the 50-year-old victim was shot multiple times.
“Guns (are) not going to make a man out of you, it’s not going to make a woman out of you,” she said.
The woman whose home was hit by the shooting said she’s fed up with the gun violence across the city. She claims guns are also getting into the hands of young children in her neighborhood.
“There are children around here that (I’ve) seen with my own eyes, nine or ten years old. Whether the pistols were real or not they still had them,” she said.
She’s now praying for peace and for people to think about the consequences.
“I’m just asking anyone that would listen, the young people, even the person or persons that came here firing their guns,” she said. “Think about the life you could have taken or several lives you could have taken.”
