One dead after car crashes, catches fire on north side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One person is dead following a car crash and as it then burst into flames on the city’s north side.

The fatal incident happened at 79th Street and River Road just before 5 a.m.

Crews found the vehicle upside down with flames showing.  There were attempts made to rescue the occupant of the vehicle out of the car after several flames were extinguished.

However, the attempts were unsuccessful as the fire continued to grow and forced crews away from the vehicle.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the white Toyota Prius was witnessed traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the fatal accident.

IFD said the person was trapped in the vehicle due to both the impact and the seat belt.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the accident.
