Greenwood police chase suspect has criminal past

GREENWOOD,Ind. (WISH) – The man accused of leading police on a chase in Greenwood has a lengthy criminal past.

Paul Kinnaman is accused of crashing a car and pointing a gun at officers before they shot him in Greenwood on Monday.

Court records show this isn’t Kinnaman’s first run-in with police.

In 2011, Paul Kinnaman was sentenced to 42 years in prison for trafficking and possessing methamphetamine in Franklin County. He was released on probation in November of 2014 after telling a judge he gained employment with a home improvement company.

Criminal defense attorney, Jack Crawford, said new laws in 2014 allowed judges to have more discretion in drug sentences and this could be a result of that.

“The idea was that the sentences were already too harsh number one and number two, the prisons were overcrowded so judges were given leeway,” says Crawford.

Court records show Kinnaman also has convictions for robbery, resisting arrest, and auto theft in Marion County.

Crawford said Kinnaman will now likely face multiple serious charges out of Greenwood — and go back to prison.

“This is an indication of a problem in our criminal justice system. Our problem is that whenever somebody gets out of prison they have to be monitored closely because the recidivism or return rate is about 65 percent,” said Crawford.
