Woman found dead inside apartment described by family as hardworking

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Family members describe an Indianapolis woman as hardworking and just starting her life when she was found dead inside of her apartment.

It happened at an apartment on Mission Terrace just before 2:30 p.m. on the city’s northwest side.

Family identified the victim as 20-year-old Netria Lyons. Her grandmother said she received a phone call from her son, who is Lyons’ father. He told her he went to check on his daughter and found her dead in what appears to be a shooting.

“I said ‘no’. I couldn’t scream my mind went blank,” said Alice Hatcher, the victim’s grandmother.

Family and friends watched Tuesday evening as police processed evidence at Woodhaven Park Apartments.

“She was climbing to the top, somebody intervene,” said Hatcher.

Hatcher told 24-Hour News 8 she last saw her granddaughter over the weekend.

“I was with her Saturday when we went to the store to get the stuff for her kickback. I was with her she went and got me at 8:00 in the evening she dropped me back off at 10:00,” said Hatcher.

Hatcher said the two exchanged goodbyes and had plans to meet again the next morning.

“She told me, ‘Grandma you going to church on Sunday?’ and I said yeah,” said Hatcher. “She said ‘I’ll be here to get you’. She never been to get me. She never did.”

Hatcher said she tried calling her granddaughter but no one answered.

“I kept blowing up her phone she never called me back. She was dead then and could had been dead after Saturday night,” Hatcher said.

Police are still trying to figure out the timeline of what happened and the motive. They have not released any information about a potential suspect.

They spent hours looking for evidence at the scene, even going through trash for clues. Loved ones don’t know who would do this and why.

“You know, sometimes you have to get down on your knees and ask the Lord you know, Lord help,” Hatcher said.

Hatcher described her granddaughter as a fun and loving person. She said Lyons moved into the apartment last December and was working two jobs.

“You know all through the midst of the storm we’re just going to have to put in the Lord’s hands because that was the devil’s work,” she said.

Police said this was not a random attack. Detectives did not find any signs that someone forced their way into the apartment.
