Rain in forecast across central Indiana for most of holiday weekend

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The July 4 holiday weekend is likely to be a wet one across central Indiana.

Saturday looks to be the best of the three days, with drier air keeping rain away from the area Saturday afternoon. Expect increasing clouds throughout the day, with below normal, but pleasant temperatures in the upper 70s.

A potent system moving in from the west will take aim on the state Sunday afternoon, and will hang around through Sunday morning. The potential exists for very heavy rainfall, with some areas picking up several inches of rain over the period, creating the threat for flooding across much of central Indiana.

Widespread rain should start to taper off from north to south by Monday late afternoon, but the potential for isolated heavy rain makers and storms will hang around even through the evening hours.

In addition to the heavy rain threat, there is a marginal risk for severe storms for the southern third of the state both Sunday and Monday. Large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado are all possible.

Temperatures will remain below average with this storm system moving through, with highs in the lower 70s on Sunday and upper 70s for Monday.
