60-year-old man injured during break-in on city’s west side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police said 60-year-old Max Leath was severely hurt during a home break-in on the city’s west side Monday morning.

It happened at his home in the 600 block of North Lyons Avenue approximately at 6:27 a.m.

According to IMPD, the boyfriend of the man’s niece has been arrested for robbery.

His name is William Joerendt and he’s 39 years old.

According to IMPD, Leath told police he thought his niece set him up to be robbed by Joerendt.

Leath told police he was asleep on the couch when someone broke into his back door.

Leath said he was attacked with a blunt object and went to the hospital with severe lacerations.

Nearly $4,000 were stolen during the robbery.

Neighbors told WISH-TV they were shocked to hear about the violent crime on their block.

“A home invasion makes no sense in this area,” Rodney Vancleave said, “We’ve lived here ten years and we haven’t seen nothing like that.”

Police have not arrested Leath’s niece, but say this is an ongoing investigation.
