72-year-old woman pulled from neighborhood pond dies

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The woman who had to be pulled from a pond in Fort Wayne who went into to save her grandson on Friday has died.

Sharon Shively, 72, died early Saturday, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning.

Shively was pulled from a pond behind homes in the 12500 block of Carroll Creek Run, near Carroll High School, just before 11 a.m. Friday. An Allen Count Sheriff’s spokesman said she had rushed into the water to save a boy – her 6-year-old grandson – who’d drifted 15-20 feet from shore.

She then began to struggle before a neighbor went into the water to help. He pulled the boy from the water first, then Shively, who was unresponsive when she made it to shore.

The boy was reported in good condition as Shively was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. She died some 18 hours later.
