Bullet damages Indy home, police think celebratory Independence Day gunfire
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A bullet damaged an Indianapolis couple’s home and now police are trying to figure out where it came from.
It happened early Monday morning at a home on Grampian Way, on Indy’s northwest side.
At this point, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said they believe the bullet was most likely the result of celebratory gunfire for the Fourth of July.
“I got up to get some coffee and saw all this white stuff on the floor,” said Steve Senior.
“We started looking around and we looked up and around at the ceiling and there it was… Then I found a bullet in the little napkin holder,” added Senior.
Senior said he remembers hearing noises overnight, but never expected to what he was about to see.
“It seemed like about 1:30 in the morning there was a really loud boom… Then a popping sound, like a cork out of a bottle. I thought it was a cork out of one of our vinegar bottles,” he said.
However, it wasn’t a cork from a bottle, it was a bullet. The bullet came through the roof and the kitchen ceiling.
Senior said as soon as he realized what happened he called police.
He said his family was very lucky the bullet didn’t do more damage or hurt anyone.
Now Senior is working to repair the damage to his house. He’s hoping the person who fired that shot thinks twice before doing it again.
“You always hear the bullet has to come down and there’s proof. It sure does come down. It came down in our house.”
IMPD says in Marion County there were 57 calls for shots fired on Independence Day 2016. That’s fewer calls than New Year’s Eve. Police reported 277 calls for shots fired December 31, 2015.
