Family waiting to be reunited with missing woman found alive

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis family is feeling a sense of relief after learning that their loved one was found alive.

Carina McDowell, 53, had been missing since Thursday. Police said she was found alive Tuesday.

Stephanie McDowell said police told her, her mom was found safe, but as of Tuesday night they have yet to be reunited.

“We’re anxious want to know what’s going on, but right now we’re just focused on the fact that she’s safe,” said McDowell.

Carina was reported missing on June 30. Witnesses told her husband she was last seen walking to a bus stop in the Riverside Park area.

“When she didn’t come home at about 8 o’clock Thursday evening, we said something was wrong, and after calling around to friends and family no one knew where she was at, so we filed a missing person’s report,” she said.

Six days after filing that report, McDowell said she received a phone call from police. They told her Tuesday afternoon her mom was found safe and nothing more.

“We don’t know anything about her whereabouts or the circumstances of her disappearance, all we know is she’s safe,” she said.

McDowell’s mother is the director of Fall Creek Gardens-an organization providing resources for people looking to grow their own food in the city.

McDowell said she and her family spent the Fourth of July searching for her mother.

“A lot of the family got together with a few friends and went and drove around some of the areas and searched as well, and there was another search party out this morning even searching,” she said.

McDowell said the support had been overwhelming with volunteers searching and putting up fliers.

“I just want to say thank you to the entire Indianapolis community. Some people drove as far as far away as Kokomo and beyond to come out and help us search for mom,” she said.

While McDowell said she still has a lot of questions, she’s happy her mother is OK.

“Probably hug her if I can get to her because there’s a lot of people that are wanting to hug her, put their arms around her and never let go again,” she said.

At this time, the family said they’re not sure when Carina is coming home.

Police have not released any more information as to where or how she was found.
