ADAMS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A man who police said sped off from a crash that left the operator of a horse and buggy seriously hurt was found dead inside his home early Tuesday.

Adams County Sheriff’s deputies and medics were called just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to a personal injury crash at 1121 South County Road 650 East in Adams County that involved a pickup truck and a horse and buggy. When responders arrived, they’d learned the driver of the pickup had drove away from the scene.

Shortly later, police tracked the driver to a home on County Road 150 South. When police arrived at the home, deputies said a man ran into the home and a gunshot rang out.

Police on the scene called in the Indiana State Police ERT team and additional officers from Decatur and Berne. After several hours with no communication from the man in the home, ERT officers stormed the home and found a man inside dead.

The man was not identified and no other information was released.

Police said the crash and death are under investigation by the Adams County Sheriff’s Department and the Adams County Coroner’s Office.

Adams County Sheriff Shane Rekeweg said the man in the buggy was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
