Man dies after being shot inside vehicle

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man is dead after being shot while inside a vehicle, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.

Officers were called to the 3400 block of McKinnie Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, initially for a personal injury crash.

Once officers arrived, they discovered a victim who appeared to have been shot, according to FWPD Spokesman Officer John Chambers.

Chambers said an initial investigation uncovered a man and woman sitting inside a vehicle in the 3500 block of McKinnie.

Chambers said a person approached the vehicle and began shooting at the driver. Once the driver was struck, he put the vehicle in gear and drove about a block before crashing into a row of bushes and a tree.

The woman was not hit by any bullets, but Chambers said she sustained minor injuries in the crash. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Paramedics pronounced the driver dead at the crash. Chambers said the victim is an adult male but was unable to confirm his identity until an autopsy is completed.

Chambers said investigators hope to gather crucial information from the woman.

Currently, there is no suspect information.

Police are trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

Crime scene technicians photographed and collected evidence along McKinnie Avenue. At least six shell casings were found in the street near where the car was parked.

Police have not said if they found any weapons.

The incident is under investigation.
