IMPD credits beat system with recent capture of high-powered rifles

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers have recently taken multiple firearms off the streets, including several high powered rifles or AK-47s, and cops say it’s evidence of the new IMPD beat system working.

Carrying high-powered rifles is not a crime, but carrying the firearm during the commission of a crime is considered a crime. During the 4th of July weekend, IMPD made five arrests downtown in Indianapolis for firearms.

Over the last month four people have been arrested for carrying AK-47s. In some cases the suspects were in possession of drugs, in one case a suspect says was found with the rifle and told police he was fearful for his life.

“We have shown that we have officers in the right place at the right time,” said IMPD’s downtown commander, Chad Knecht.

The guns collected are kept in IMPD’s property room until the cases have been cleared or prosecuted. In one case a gun was given back to a suspect because he had a legal gun permit.
