13-day bike ride for slain officers’ families set to start

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A group of active and retired police officers and supporters are set to begin a 13-day bicycle ride around Indiana to benefit the families of officers who have died in the line of duty.

The Cops Cycling for Survivors ride is to begin Monday morning after a departure ceremony at the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis. Gov. Mike Pence joined the riders as they started the first-day leg to Richmond.

The ride marks the 10th year since state police Lt. Gary Dudley and retired Lake County Sheriff’s Department Chief Gary Martin were killed in a crash during the 2006 tour.

The annual trip is to cover over nearly 1,000 miles and conclude July 23 at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
