Family releases statement after their son died in Dallas shootings

DALLAS (WISH) – One of the Dallas police officers killed in last week’s attack was Brent Thompson. His family released a statement about his death Monday.

DART said early Friday morning that 43-year-old officer Brent Thompson was killed in the shootings. A tweet from @dartmedia says that Thompson joined the DART Police Department in 2009.

He is the first officer killed in the line of duty since the agency formed a police department in 1989.

His family thanked everyone for their support.

Thank you for your prayers and the untold number of messages supporting Brent and all of us. You have blessed and sustained us. Our hearts are broken by Thursday’s events. Thank you also for the support you’ve shown Brent’s DART Police colleagues, Officers Cannon, McBride, and Retana, who were wounded. Please keep all police, in Dallas and across America, in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with the consequences of that horrible night. Your support will help keep us strong in the coming days and weeks.

Thanks are also due the news media for respecting our wish for privacy at this time. Our focus has been, and will continue to be, on honoring Brent in the days ahead and planning our next steps as a family.

DART has set up a Go Fund Me account to help Officer Thompson’s family.
