Lake County officer faces 14 charges after crash

GARY, Ind. (AP/WISH) – A Lake County, Indiana, sheriff’s deputy faces 14 charges including driving while intoxicated after a hit-and-run crash in Gary left an Illinois man hospitalized.

Indiana State Police said Tuesday that Lake County Sheriff Lieutenant Guy Mikulich, a 16-year veteran of the department faces four felony charges and 10 misdemeanors stemming from the Sunday afternoon crash.

Police say 37-year-old Derrick Dircks of Frankfort, Illinois, was outside his minivan parked along a street following the Gary Air Show when it was struck by Mikulich’s unmarked car. Dircks has been released after being hospitalized with serious injuries.

Gary police later stopped Mikulich, and a blood draw showed he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent, or nearly twice the level to be considered intoxicated.

The sheriff’s department has placed Mikulich on paid administrative leave. He doesn’t have a published home telephone number.
