Three arrested in plot to harm Baton Rouge officers

(CNN) — Baton Rouge police Chief Carl Dabadie on Tuesday said officers have arrested three people whom they believe were planning to kill police in the Louisiana city.

One person was arrested during a weekend burglary of a pawn shop, in which eight guns were stolen, Dabadie told reporters.

The prisoner told investigators they were also looking “to get bullets to harm police officers in the Baton Rouge police department,” the chief said.

Since Saturday, detectives have arrested two other suspects in the case, including a 13-year-old. One suspect remains at large, the chief said.

The threat was the main reason law officers were quick to take aggressive action when they believed protesters were becoming unruly over the weekend after the shooting of Alton Sterling by police, the chief and other top law enforcement officers said.

“We can’t take anything for granted any more,” said East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux. “What you saw in the (law enforcement) response is because of the very real and viable threats against law enforcement. Look what happened in Dallas. A very peaceful protest and then some crazy madman.”CNN’s Artemis Moshtaghian contributed to this report.
