Honor veterans and active-duty military at Indiana Grand

It’s a tribute to those who serve and protect. Indiana Grand’s Royal Derby weekend event “A Knight in Arms,” will honor our veterans and active-duty military this Thursday, July 14. The event will include a reverse raffle to the first 300 guests and more!

Here are the event details:

• Eight races on the afternoon card are named in honor of fallen officers, soldiers, wounded veterans and organizations that provide assistance to those who serve and protect

• Several presentations of the flag will be provided:

a. Military Color Guard to kick off National Anthem before racing at 1:30PM

b. Army Heavy Horse Mounted Color Guard to present colors following racing and before event begins in Clubhouse (approx. 6:30PM)

c. Garry Lauziere (Indiana Grand’s bugler) to provide “Taps” on his trumpet during presentation of colors at approx. 6:30 PM

• Performances by:

a. Triton Central Marching Band at 5:30PM on the apron

b. Ladies for Liberty dance troupe to perform in winner’s circle after Race 9

c. Brenna Shannon to sing the second National Anthem at approx. 6:30PM from winner’s circle

d. Blue Ridge Banned performs on Clubhouse stage beginning at 7:20PM

e. Ladies for Liberty perform on Clubhouse stage at 7:50PM

• A Knight in Arms Clubhouse event

a. Complimentary cocktail hour from 5:30 – 6:30PM in the Clubhouse

b. Buffet and reverse raffle with 22 ancillary prizes as numbers are announced leading up to the Grand Prize of $2,200 cash – Mrs. Indiana, Zarah Skelton, will assist with the reverse raffle

c. Guest Speaker is Major General (retired) R. Martin Umbarger• Other notes:

a. The entire evening is centered around the number “22” to honor and signify the 22 soldiers lost per day – Tickets to the event were $22; there are 22 ancillary prizes for the raffle; the Grand Prize is $2,200

b. Darin Fishburn will provide information on the “Route for the Brave” – a walk along Route 40 from Coast to Coast to raise funds and awareness for Helping Hands for Freedom – it started April 28 in Atlantic City, NJ and will end Aug. 25 in San Francisco: the walkers are currently in Colorado and they do a daily dedication to a fallen soldier. c. Warrior Vodka is the revenue source for “Cheers to the Warriors” and proceeds from the sale of the premium vodka are donated to combat injured and disabled veterans through monetary grants. The company began in 2013 by Mid-Oak Distillery, a co-veteran owned company and they later teamed up with veteran Johathan Jans, injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. d. K9 for Veteran Warriors, under the direction of Veteran Michael Tellerino, provides canines to veterans for assistance with multiple post-war injuries and stress incurred during any combat conflict. The organization also provides food and basic veterinary care for the lifetime of the dog with no cost to Veterans – in 2012, there were over 300,000 cases of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) reported for veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

e. Major General (retired) R. Martin Umbarger served over four decades – 11 years as the Adjunct General of the Indiana National Guard and 42 years as a guardsman and retired in May 2015. Appointed by Gov. Joe Kernan in 2004, Umbarger’s tenure was the lead of one of the nation’s largest National Guard contingents with more than 14,000 service members and was called upon 27 times, including successful deployments of Hoosier units to Iraq and Afghanistan.
