Drug raid leads to 11 arrests; guns and cash found

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Eleven people in a southwest side home found themselves in handcuffs after police raided the place in search of drugs.

Police executed the warrant search Saturday morning in the 1400 block of Philips Drive.

Some neighbors told 24-Hour News 8 off camera they’re all for IMPD’s effort to stop drug dealing.

“There’s a lot of damage,” said Benjamin Henry. He lives on the other side of the duplex that was raided. He said he also knows several of the people who were arrested. “(Police) broke each door basically in the place.”

Henry wasn’t there when it happened but feels he would have been arrested if he was there Saturday.

“(Police) ripped up the carpet. They threw trash all over the floor. They literally dumped the trash bags on the floor that we had in our trash can,” he said. He and a few others who knew the people arrested, weren’t happy with how police aggressively carried out the warrant.

Mayor Joe Hogsett said the investigation started with a tip that suspicious activity was happening in and around the home.

Police then got a search warrant. Once inside they said they found drugs, guns, and cash.

“I can’t reasonably predict what they were up to, but there’s some evidence that they were planning to do some dangerous things to people throughout the city,” said Mayor Hogsett.

Last month, IMPD unveiled a new initiative named “Operation First Step.”

The goal of the effort is the cut down on drug trafficking and the violent crime that comes with it. Twenty-four people were arrested when it was first enacted and IMPD Chief Troy Riggs said the initiative was just getting started.

“You can’t let your pedal off the accelerator. You have to keep it firmly planted,” added Mayor Hogsett.

The police report lists several felony crimes having occurred in the home or connected to those arrested.

However, police didn’t say exactly who was being charged and with what crimes.  Police said they’re planning to release more details on the raid this week.
