Suspect wanted in connection to multiple break-ins on city’s north side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police are asking for the public’s help after a man was caught on camera stealing close to $20,000 worth of jewelry and cash from a home.

It happened near 65th Street and Meridian Street in the Meridian Hills area last week.

Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department believe the man seen on camera may be connected to more than five other cases in the area.

They said they have noticed a trend just over the past several weeks.

“It has been force entry into the residence usually through a door a patio door or a back door,” said spokesperson James Gillespie, IMPD.

The break-in happened last Wednesday before 1:30 p.m. The surveillance camera captured a man walking into the master bedroom.

“Typically, they do target the bedrooms because this suspect is specifically looking for jewelry and cash,” he said.

The man is seen on camera removing a pillow case and using it as a bag to stuff the stolen items. The video shows him going through the drawers.

Investigators said he got away with high-end watches, like Cartier, Rolex, and Tag Heuer.

The man moves quickly but doesn’t realize he’s being filmed the whole time.

“The homeowner did an excellent job on their placement of that surveillance video camera and as soon as he did recognize it as surveillance video he did try to destroy that camera unsuccessfully,” he said.

Some people living nearby say they too have experienced the same thing last year.

One woman told 24-Hour News 8 someone smashed her window with a brick and stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry.

Another man said the intruder in his case got away with important paper work and electronics.

“I put a camera right in front of the door ever since things have been good,” said burglary victim, who didn’t want to be identified on camera. “I wished I did that before. I don’t know if it could have been prevented, but I wish I did.”

Investigators collected evidence at the scene, including finger prints in the most recent case.

If you think you recognize the suspect in the video, you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262 TIPS.
