Charges reinstated against doctor charged with reckless homicide

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An appeals court has reversed a decision to throw out several charges against a physician charged with reckless homicide.

John Sturman was charged with 19 felonies in 2015. A Marion County trial court had thrown out three counts of reckless homicide against Sturman. That decision was overturned by the Indiana Court of Appeals on July 14 in a unanimous decision.

One count of issuing invalid prescription drugs by a practitioner will remain dismissed.

Prosecutors believe that 15 of his patients died within a month of receiving medication and that autopsies prove three of those.

“We appreciate the presentation of this case to the Court of Appeals by the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, and we are pleased that we will now be able to move forward with the most serious charges,” Prosecutor Terry Curry said.

Sturman, now facing a total of 18 charges, is due back in court on August 10.
