Homeowners help police fight crime with better quality alarm systems

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IMPD released video of a burglary caught on tape. It happened last week in the 6700 block of North Meridian Street. Perhaps most alarming about the video is not the burglary itself, but instead, the alarm system.

Clear video shows the suspect grabbing a pillow case, then filling it with whatever he can put his hands on.

“He had no fear. You can see that. He was calm, cool. I was surprised how long he took. Obviously they knew somehow that these people weren’t going to be back home,” said Arby Babaian of All About Security.

Babaian’s business specializes in business and home systems. He also watched the North Meridian Street burglary.

“That’s great that you have a video camera, but I don’t want to watch something after it happened. I’d rather it not happen or catch the person,” Babaian said.

Along with surveillance cameras, Babaian recommends audible alarms, “The average burglar, if you can deter him for about 60 seconds, they’re moving on nine times out of ten.”

From door bells with cameras to security thermostats, there are a variety of products on the market. But, systems don’t come without a price tag. Equipment, installation and monthly service charges add up. If you can’t afford a system, Babaian recommends placing warning signs; beware of dog for example.

“Just by having that deterrent, they’re lazy. They’re going to take the path of least resistance. So, why would they want to come in to your house knowing that, even thinking you have a security system,” said Babaian.

IMPD says they’ve received several promising tips in the North Meridian Street burglary thanks to the video.

Every business will vary with prices, but at All About Security, Babaian says equipment can cost anywhere between $400-700, plus there is a monthly service fee that starts at $19.99. For more information visit the company’s website.
