Neil Armstrong’s helmet goes on display to mark Moon landing

CHANTILLY, Va. (AP) – Astronaut Neil Armstrong’s gloves and helmet from his historic Apollo 11 Moon landing mission are going on display at the Smithsonian.

The museum says the pieces from his spacesuit will be on display starting Wednesday morning at the Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly.

The timing coincides with the anniversary of the July 20, 1969, moon landing.

Museum officials say the gloves and helmet, which are fragile, have not been on display since 2012. They expect the items to be on display for one year.

The museum is also putting out a call for photos that members of the public may have taken back when Armstrong’s spacesuit went on national tour in 1970.
