Thieves steal $50,000 worth of wiring from empty building

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Near 30th Street and Georgetown Road sits an empty building.

The brick structure once housed a Big Lots, but when ownership moved the chain to another location, nothing filled the building’s spot.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, thieves broke into the vacant building and swiped $50,000 worth of wiring.

Businesses with surveillance cameras near the building caught the suspects going in and out of the building; however, the video is not clear enough to give a good suspect description.

“You be surprised what walks through here in the middle of the night,” said resident Carl Burch.

It’s unclear what the suspects will do with the wiring. In Indiana, the suspects will have a difficult time selling the stolen wiring.

In the state, scrap yards have a series of polices and procedures to follow, including a copy of identification and a letter of release for the scraps, which all goes into the scrap yard’s file.

24-Hour News 8 reached out to the company that owns the vacant building, but has not been able to make contact with a representative.

“A thief is no good to me. If they want to work, work, go earn your money,” said Burch.
